Work Management Features

Following the successful completion of the ResourceVue MVP, the team and I tackled the next critical phase of product evolution: Designing accessible work management features that would seamlessly integrate with our resource management framework. This expansion delivered a comprehensive workflow system that addressed core user needs while maintaining the intuitive experience established in our initial release.

/ Context

/ Context

Through conversations with prospective customers in the Engineering and Pharmaceutical sectors, we identified critical pain points in their day-to-day operations. These challenges significantly impacted project delivery timelines while creating frustration and inefficiencies across teams, ultimately leading to missed deadlines and increased operational costs.

/ Opportunity

/ Opportunity

Our market research revealed that potential customers were trapped using outdated, cumbersome software for work tracking. Their frustration stemmed not just from the limitations of these legacy systems or the time wasted navigating them, but from how deeply embedded these inadequate tools had become in their critical business processes. With no viable alternatives available, these organisations had resigned themselves to inefficiency - creating both a clear market opportunity and a pool of highly motivated potential users eager to test our solution. This insight guided our product strategy and helped us prioritise features that would deliver immediate value.

/ Assignments

/ Assignments

User research into both ResourceVue users and the broader market indicated that effective work tracking would require nuanced classification  (Projects, Assignments, Tasks). I designed with future scalability in mind, creating flexible UI patterns that could accommodate expanding functionality without requiring significant redesign. The introduction of ‘Assignments’ delivered key functionality that empowered users to immediately engage with the app:

User testing showed that the Assignments feature reduced work tracking administrative time by 28% while increasing visibility into task status by 45%.

/ Projects

/ Projects

Building on the successful implementation of Assignments, we worked on providing users with the ability to organise work within broader initiatives. The Projects feature closely mirrored existing customer business processes, facilitating smoother adoption and reducing change management challenges. I introduced a new UI component: Nested Pages, which enabled intuitive navigation from high-level Projects down to constituent Assignments.

/ Dashboards

/ Dashboards

As the product became integrated into the customer's workflow, the need for centralised performance visibility became increasingly apparent. Responding to this requirement, I designed a suite of interactive data visualisation widgets that enabled managers to assess team performance metrics at a glance and drill down into specific datasets to identify trends, bottlenecks, and opportunities,

This feature implementation yielded measurable business impact, with customers reporting a 35% increase in successfully completed assignments per month and a significant reduction in overdue projects. Dashboard engagement metrics showed that 72% of managers accessed these visualisations at least three times weekly.

/ Configurable Forms

/ Configurable Forms

User research highlighted a critical need for more customisation options when creating assignments and projects. Users were particularly interested in tagging custom categories to work items. To address this requirement, I designed a flexible form configuration system that allowed managers to:

  • Create custom dropdown fields tailored to their specific workflow requirements

  • Label options using terminology that matched their organisational language

  • Control field positioning to reflect their prioritisation of information

This feature dramatically improved product adaptability across different use cases and industries. Following implementation, ResourceVue Support reported a 40% reduction in customisation-related support requests, while user satisfaction scores for the assignment creation process increased by 25 percentage points.

/ Outcomes

/ Outcomes

The work management feature suite transformed ResourceVue from a resource planning tool into a comprehensive work management product that:

  • Reduced administrative overhead by an average of 32% across customer organisations

  • Improved cross-functional visibility by connecting previously siloed work tracking systems

  • Increased on-time project completion rates by 28% according to customer reporting

  • Provided quantifiable metrics that team members could use to demonstrate their contributions

  • Established a flexible foundation that continues to accommodate new workflow requirements without requiring significant redesign
